Our Eyes Are Fixed On: Brandon Castillo
Brandon Castillo, founder of the Deep Ellum Outdoor Market, will make his debut on the Oral Fixation stage for “No Strings Attached!”
Brandon Castillo was born in NYC, raised in Sherman, TX, high schooled in Dallas, educated at Pitzer College, expatriated to Madrid, and finally repatriated to Texas. Brandon is the owner and operator of Deep Ellum Outdoor Market and the Deep Ellum Postal and Grocer. He married the best girl in the world 4 weeks ago.
What inspired you to participate in Oral Fixation? I love performing, but also there are stories about my life that I’ve always wanted to tell, but never taken the opportunity to do so.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why? You can’t put a price on a good conversation, and I’d like to talk to Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Nikola Tesla, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Malcolm Gladwell, Albert Einstein, and Kurt Vonnegut among others.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I always wanted to hang on the side of a truck like a garbage man.
What is your favorite Dallas hangout? Right now, I love Craft and Growler.
What is your favorite smell? Baking bread.
What is the best book you’ve read in the last decade, and why would you recommend it? I love Ender’s Game, and not just because I love sci-fi. I think the author, despite his real life opinions, writes good characters rooted in tolerance and understanding even in trying situations.
Share anything fun, silly or unique about yourself. I love to sing karaoke. Being Filipino, I was actually raised on it.
Sneak Peek: “Armed with a guitar, a backpack, and a bachelor’s degree in linguistics, I took to the streets of Madrid to seek adventure. I had grown up a Europhile, yearning to experience countries and cultures far older than those of North Texas. They’ve been around this long, surely they’ve got something figured out, right?”
