On Wednesday, September 21, hundreds of people packed into Dallas City Performance Hall to witness a moment in history. For the first time in Dallas, a group of men and women were set to share their own, true personal stories related to abortion. This special edition of Oral Fixation (An Obsession with True Life Tales), entitled “Out From Under The Rug,” was created, produced, and directed by Oral Fixation founder Nicole Stewart, who shared her own abortion story in the OF show, “Bun in the Oven,” and felt compelled to push the envelope even further: an entire show of stories about abortion. Her hope: humanize this hot-button topic that has been stigmatized and moralized, and in this election year, open up a space where a conversation can begin. “It is time to #SweepOutTheShame of abortion,” Nicole has said. And given the crowd that showed up for #OutFromUnderTheRug, she is far from alone in her thinking.
On Tuesday, May 10, hundreds of people beat it down to Dallas City Performance Hall to partake in the sweetest treat of the day: the Oral Fixation (An Obsession with True Life Tales) Season Five finale, “Icing on the Cake.” And boy, did our seven storytellers deliver! Rich with all the right ingredients, their seven tales of transformation and change served up a multi-course evening that absolutely satisfied every appetite in the house!
On Wednesday, April 13, the cast of “Pulling Teeth” took to the Dallas City Performance Hall stage and delivered just what the dentist ordered: seven crowning tales of transformation and change. Funnier than laughing gas and deeper than a root canal, our “Pulling Teeth” storytellers led the audience on a wild ride that drilled deep, aligned smiles and filled the cavities within. From literal to metaphorical, these “Pulling Teeth” tales went down easy.
On Thanksgiving Eve, Oral Fixation storytellers welcomed the Dallas community to the dinner table of their lives with their stories of food, fun and family for “Too Many Cooks.”
“I didn’t expect it to be so much fun!”
Audiences found themselves rolling over in laughter at the Dallas City Performance Hall during our “In The Doghouse” show, one of the most amusing shows in Oral Fixation history.
It was a night of inspiration and breaking new ground as Dallas City Performance Hall welcomed Oral Fixation to their new performance home for season 5 opener, “Pushing The Envelope”.
“Destination America,” Oral Fixation’s packed collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art’s Arts & Letters Live and SOLUNA International Art & Music Festival, was a night to remember, celebrating the amazing endurance of the human spirit through the true stories of immigrants and refugees!
To start off the evening, youth guitar ensemble La Rondalla from Oak Cliff played a lively set. Then, SOLUNA resident artist Monte Laster presented a stunning film entitled Destinations, which featured each of the storytellers interacting with a work of art from the Dallas Museum of Art that resonated with their journey.
