It’s Showtime!

Dallas’ beloved live storytelling series for adults wraps up tonight with the final show of its fifth season at the stunning Dallas City Performance Hall in the heart of the Arts District. For this month’s “Icing on the Cake” theme, we’ve baked up something astonishing. Sweeter than chocolate and richer than cheesecake, “Icing on the Cake” is guaranteed to satisfy your appetite.

THE SHOW:

Oral Fixation’s fifth season, concludes with “Icing on the Cake.” There, seven Dallasites will explore both the literal and the figurative meanings of “Icing on the Cake,” from tales of reality show cooking adventures to road trip awakenings, creative cakes to birthday blues, cactus butts to bear caves, and human rights’ protectors to micro-preemie survivors, “Icing on the Cake” has every ingredient required to be amazing.

THE VENUE:

Have you ever been to Dallas City Performance Hall?  It is simply amazing. Located at 2520 Flora Street, Dallas, TX 75201, the venue is situated between the Wyly Theatre and One Arts Plaza, across the street from Booker T. Washington High School in the heart of the Arts District.  From the comfortable built-in movie theatre-style seating to the fact you can bring your alcoholic beverages into the theatre to its state of the art lights, video and sound capabilities, it is going to rock your world! Valet and self-parking is available at One Arts Plaza, surface lots on Ross Avenue or park free at a meter on Ross. Surrounding dining options before the shows include Lark on the Park, Proof + Pantry and Savor.. You’re going to want to make a habit of catching up with friends at our shows and hitting the town.

$25 individual tickets can be purchased at the door, by phone at (888) 454-4353, or online through Prekindle. Group and student discounts are available. Students show their ID at the door for $15 tickets.

“Pulling Teeth” featuring Greg Silva

Theme: “Pulling Teeth”
Storyteller: Greg Silva

Having gotten lucky and survived colon cancer, writer and improv artist Greg Silva took the audience from despair to stitches with his hilarious tale of having to poop by 5 p.m. in order to go home following surgery. “I tried thinking happy thoughts,” Greg said. “But no luck. My bags were packed — but so were my intestines.”

“Pulling Teeth” featuring Poonam Desai

Theme: “Pulling Teeth”
Storyteller: Poonam Desai

School psychologist Poonam Desai kicked off the night by charming the audience with her winning smile — and the story of the metal her mouth once endured to acquire it. With wit and grace, Poonam chronicled her adventures in orthodontia as well as her personal journey of achieving balance between two cultures.

Our Eyes Are Fixed On: John Stanton

He wasn’t sure he ever wanted kids, but now John Stanton relishes his adventures with his three boys. Next week, he’ll take the Oral Fixation stage in “Icing on the Cake” to relive the first road trip he took with his two oldest.

John Stanton is a hospital management consultant that resides in East Dallas. He and his wife of over 20 years, Rachel, are the zookeepers for three boys, two dogs, two cats, two cockatiels, a leopard gecko and three very spoiled chickens. In an alternate universe, John is an organic gardener and master craftsman.

Our Eyes Are Fixed On: Jacob Longoria

Every year, everything always seems to go wrong on Jacob Longoria’s birthday. Next month, he’ll take the Oral Fixation stage in “Icing on the Cake” to talk about how he managed to turn his worst birthday yet into one of the best days of his life. 

Jacob Longoria is a 32-year-old from Mission, Texas. A graduate of The University of North Texas, he recently married his lovely wife Kasie. His hobbies are kayak fishing and screenwriting. And he is looking forward to sharing many of his stories.

Valerie Stokes wasn’t sure she ever wanted to have kids, but that all changed, not long before she found out she was having twins. Next month, she’ll take the Oral Fixation stage to share her premature twin girls’ NICU journey in “Icing on the Cake.” 

Valerie moved to North Texas in 2003 to attend college at UNT. She’s a part-time blogger and full-time mom to two feisty one-year-old twin girls. An amateur yogi, she runs on Dr Pepper and believes any bad day can be cured with baby giggles.

While she wasn’t necessarily doted on 364 days out of the year, Penelope Taylor’s birthdays always meant scratch-baked cakes from her mother. Next month she’ll take the Oral Fixation stage in “Icing on the Cake” to describe how’s she’s continued the tradition with her own daughter. 

The middle child of three sisters. Penelope Taylor was born in New York and lived in Manhattan for several years, but she’s been an adopted Texan since 1990. She’s the proud Mom of a beautiful daughter who’s a junior at Texas State. She’s a non-fiction writer, theater and music lover, foodie and avid traveler.

From her propensity to cook for classmates and coworkers, Alyssia Birnbaum’s always felt like a mother. Next month, she’ll hit the Oral Fixation stage in “Icing on the Cake,” where she’ll talk about her reality television experience, and how she turned her love of cooking into a full-time job.

Alyssia Birnbaum graduated from SMU with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing in 2009. She owns and operates Mama’s Gotta Eat, providing healthy meals in-home and delivery for new mothers and families. She lives in Carrollton with her husband, Eric, her daughters, Amelia and Charlotte and their canine bodyguards.

“Partner In Crime” Featuring Jeffry Farrell

Theme: “Partner In Crime”
Storyteller: Jeffry Farrell

Jeffry Farrell’s tale of his friendship with mentor Kumar Pallana (of Bottle Rocket fame) spanned decades, from the Thanksgiving night they met to the morning Jeffry placed Kumar’s ashes in the Ganges River in India. Filled with life lessons, Jeffry’s story resonated with many in the audience.
